PHL Round2: Dogs and Hyenas tied 11-11

Round 2 Game Review: Dogs vs Hyenas

1st Period:
The Hyenas started goalie Nick Sellers as the Dogs turned to veteran goalie Damien ‘Bussy” Holland to start the season off for them. It was the Hyenas who came out of the blocks fast scoring four first period goals to the Dogs two. The Dogs clearly had trouble early on as they had the bye the first week and took them awhile to find their feet. After an amazing performance last week Jamie Bourke was in every 1st period goal for the Hyenas as he scored two and helped out on the other two. New recruit Mikey Ting scored his first goal for his new team as Matt Anderson scored the other goal for the Hyenas. Captain Travis Alabaster opened the scoring for the Dogs as Jake Aparicio scored late in the period with the assist to Oakes.
End of the 1st period Hyenas lead Dogs 4-2

2nd Period:
Things went from bad to worse for the Dogs as the Hyenas continued to put pressure on the young Dogs outfit. The Hyenas scored 3 even strength goals and also added a short-handed goal as the Dogs could only manage three goals. The positive for the Dogs heading into half time was that they had taken only 14 shots for their five goals. The Hyenas had taken 30 shots on goalie Holland as 8 got past him with very little help from the Dogs team in front of him. Anderson scored the short-handed goalie as he scored a natural hat trick. Anderson scored four goals in a row mainly assisted by Bourke with roles reversed from last week. Bourke scored the other goal assisted by Belic and Ting. Brent Fitzgerald scored his first goal in Dogs colours as he got two for the period one on the PP. The other goal scored for the period was from Alabaster.
At half time Hyenas lead Dogs 8-5

3rd Period:
In a weird turn of events the third period was very low scoring with only three goals scored by both teams. Anderson stepped up to score his fifth of the game and Belic scored his first for the night. The only goal scored by the Dogs was to rookie Fitzgerald assisted by Bailey.
End of the 3rd period Hyenas lead Dogs 10-6

4th Period:
In a strange turn of events coach Dwayne Pereria put rookie goalie Nick Stephenson in to see his first PHL game. This seemed to spark the Dogs into action as the piled on five 4th period goals to the Hyenas one. The Dogs seemed to have energy heading into the last period as they skated with 11 players compared with the Hyenas 7. The Dogs scored five unanswered goals to take the lead off the Hyenas who had control of the game most of the night. The Dogs scored on the PP just 16 seconds into the final period as Muir sent a pass to Alabaster netting his hat trick of the game. Aparicio scored the next goal from just inside the centre line that sailed over Sellar’s glove side shoulder. Alabaster scored the next two as the Dogs drew even with the Hyenas who seemed to have no energy left. As the Dogs tied the game Ryan Bennet was called for roughing which gave the chance for the Dogs to steal an unlikely win over the Hyenas. In a tic tac toe play the Dogs scored on the PP as Alabaster gave the puck to Muir who sent the puck back door to rookie Fitzgerald as he slotted the go ahead goal. The Hyenas weren’t done yet as they pulled the goalie to add a fifth skated on the rink. This move paid off as Bourke scored to tie the game with 14 seconds left on the clock.
The young Dogs team looked lost in the first half but seemed to pull together in the second half with a variety of goal scorers. The Hyenas looked sharp however looked like they ran out of gas towards the end of the game.

Final Score Dogs and Hyenas tied 11-11
