Big Thanks to VRDL for sharing their experiences from their recent trip to Arizona

“In April, the VRDL “All Stars” travelled to Tucson, Arizona to compete in the iconic WFTDA Dust Devil Tournament 2012.

The invitation-only event saw ten leagues battle it out on the track for the annual championship title. It was the VRDL’s first international tournament (and first WFTDA-sanctioned bout since becoming full members).

Entering the competition as bottom seed, the All Stars proved to be a surprise wildcard convincingly winning 3 out of 4  bouts & placing 5th in the tournament overall.

This is a remarkable achievement for the league’s first international tour, & a testament to the intense training & dedication shown by the All Star skaters in the lead up to the event.

“ Kitty DeCapitate says: “Dust Devil was pretty much the most amazing experience I have had in roller derby to date, & I’m pretty sure the rest of the team feels the same way.

We were genuinely blown away by the level of support we received from everyone at the event who genuinely wanted to see us do well, and who took the time out to help us along the way. So many kernels of unforgettableness!

Seeing us achieve all of the little goals we set out to do and that we had been training for, for so long, was pretty special! And the bond our team now has is priceless. “

“Feedback from Rolling Star Derby – Bama & Smacklepop on the Bonnie D Stroir camp”…

Roller derby coach & skater extraordinaire, Bonnie D Stroir graced Australian shores in April/May 2012.

Bonnie is true roller derby royalty, she is the founder of the San Diego Derby Dolls, was MVP for the San Diego Derby Dolls 2008, 2009, 2010, Highest Scoring Jammer Derby Dolls 2010, Battle On the Bank Tournament MVP 2009, 2011, & most recently was World Cup Champions, Team USA’s Assistant Coach.

“Rolling Star Derby” in partnership with Skate Victoria, hosted two Melbourne boot camps with Bonnie on April 14 & 15 at Puckhandler’s Stadium.

85 skaters attended the camps, with all of the leagues in Victoria represented as well as a handful of skaters from Adelaide, Sydney & Hobart also flying over for the experience.

Running in conjunction with the skaters camp was one for referees, run by Sydney Roller Derby League’s Kernel Panic.  Over 20 zebras attended the 2-day camp which consisted of on and off-skates training sessions, followed by a black & white scrimmage each day.

Skate Victoria is such a proud supporter of roller derby & continues to show this commitment through its continued involvement in the growth and development of the sport.

A thousand thanks to Skate Victoria for showing their actions to be as loud as their words & to all of the amazing skaters, referees, NSO’s and volunteers who came along & made these camps such a success.

National Volunteer Week – “Everyone Counts” 14-20th May

Volunteers everyone countsInteresting Fact,  6.1 million Australians volunteer annually.

Skate Victoria wishes to recognise the efforts of all our Volunteers, who contribute countless hours of their own personal time to Volunteering within Inline Hockey, Roller Derby & Speed Skating.

Many tasks often are not acknowledged or more so, even thought about by people, as being important, but most are so essential, to the smooth running of your discipline.

We would like to let you know that we value your assistance & contribution, as without volunteers such as each & every one of you, the sport simply would not run …..
